This British Geological Survey (BGS) geophysical and sampling survey was carried out as part of the Continetal Shelf Unit II programe in the Sea of the Hebrides and the Minches from late August to Mid October 1970 on board the RV Vickers Venturer in conjunction with BGS1970/9 survey. A secondary objective as to assess the feasibility of operating sampling and geophysics on one ship. Seabed samples were collected with Shipek Grab, gravity corer, vibrocorer and rockdrill. Sea floor data were collected using echosounder and transit sonar. Subsurface seismic data were gathered using Sparker. Technical detail contained in BGS Marine Geophysics report 27.

Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 29041 |
Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | British Geological Survey (BGS) Geophysical and Sampling Survey 1970/VV/8: Sea of Hebrides and the Minches (22/08/1970 to 30/09/1970) |
Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | 1970/8 |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | abc9f747-547c-0f38-e044-0003ba9b0d98 |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | BGS_CMD_REF30 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1970-08-22 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1970-09-30 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | 5 |
Spatial resolution unit | This describes the unit of spatial resolution which for distance must be metres. | urn:ogc:def:uom:EPSG::9001 |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |
Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Geophysical equipment types used included: Echo Sounder, Sparker and Transit Sonar. Sample equipment types used included: Beach Sample, Corer: Rock Gravity, Corer: Sediment Gravity, Corer: Vibrocorer, Diver Collected, Dredge: Rock, Drill, Grab: Shipek, Photographic Site and Submersible. The survey was undertaken by British Geological Survey. For more detailed information on the acquisition equipment and data collection techniques, operational standards, data processing methods and quality control procedures used on this survey see the Report of Survey/Cruise Report and associated documentation where available. The information available may vary depending on the age of the survey. Data are checked and loaded to the BGS Coastal and Marine data management system following BGS marine data management procedures. |
